At the technical level, large language models are trained on huge amounts of human-written text, from novels and fan fiction to Reddit threads and customer-support logs. In those datasets, first‑person phrases like “I think…”, “I feel…”, and “I can help you with that” are extremely common, so the model learns them as statistically natural ways to respond in dialogue. Product teams then lean into that habit instead of suppressing it, because a first‑person voice makes the system feel like a fluid assistant rather than a stiff software menu.
The use of “I” is therefore less a technical necessity and more a product decision aimed at engagement and trust.
